1. American Bobtail

Originating in the 1960s, the breed was created when a bobtailed wild cat was crossed with a seal point Siamese.

Like its near sibling the Ragdoll, the Ragamuffin cat just recently emerged as a separate breed.

2. Ragamuffin

The first Ragamuffin arrived in the 1970s, and they were the result of crossing Persian and Himalayan cats with Ragdolls.

Ragdoll cats are a very recent breed, as was just described.

3. Ragdoll

These large, cute kitties are remarkably tolerant and placid. Ragdolls are remarkably placid and quiet despite their large stature.

The Japanese Bobtail has its roots in both Japan and Southeast Asia.

4. Japanese Bobtail

The first artistic depictions of these prehistoric creatures appear in Japan in the sixth century.

The Norwegian Forest cat is a rare and ancient breed that developed independently in Norway's forests over the course of hundreds of years.

5. Norwegian Forest Cat

Fans of these huge, loving cats call them "Wegies." The color and pattern of their coats can vary widely.
